Eurovision Song Contest 2016: The United Kingdom gets its first ‘douze points’ for five years

Malta gave the UK a 12 and we can’t help but be excited (Picture: BBC)

We might have finished way down the bottom of the scoreboard, but let’s not forget the magic moment that the United Kingdom nabbed its first ‘douze points’ on the Eurovision scoreboard since 2011.

Yes, Saturday night’s show saw Joe and Jake get themselves that all-important maximum score, courtesy of the Maltese juries.

Which – quite aside from the other points they received – automatically meant the UK did better at the contest in 2016 than they did in 2015, when Electro Velvet nabbed just five points.

Joe and Jake performed second last in the final on Saturday night with the song You’re Not Alone – and although the UK may have finished in 24th place we still got our highest score – 62 points – since 2011.

Blue, who finished 11th with 100 points, were also the last UK act to receive a ‘douze points’ in the contest, courtesy of Bulgaria.

And it’s not the first time that Malta have given their top score to the United Kingdom either, awarding their 12 to Scooch in 2007 (no, we’re not sure why either…)

Congrats lads…!
